5 Unusual Flowers to Put in Your Garden

Unusual flowers brings attraction in our garden since they’re unique in their appearance and mystical beauty worthy of appreciation to florist and nursery operators.

They separates from the domesticated flowers and are bet a mystery as to their unusual natural characteristics hence they’re considered unusual flowers.

Below are lists of unusual flowers.

1. Corpse Lily (Rafflesia arnoldii). Discovered by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and company this flower a native of Sumatra , Java and eastern Malaysia, is unusual because of its smell like a rotten meat. Its flower start to form a cabbage-like bud on the root of the host plant and it would take nine months before it matures and open into beautiful red flower with white spots and exudes a disgusting odor similar to dead rotten animals. Its single flower weight around 11 kilos and produced about several gallons of nectar. And this is considered as the largest flower of the world measuring about 3 feet in diameter bloom and produces a thousands seeds. Corpse lily grows with the aid of a host plant where it gets to provide its roots, leaves, stem and even its chlorophyll needs.

2. Butterwort (Pinguicula). Called in Latin as Pinguicula, which means “little greasy one”, Butterwort is a unique plant that hide a slippery secret lip-like in appearance with a spur end rise on simple stems several inches into the air. Its leaves have a greasy substance like a glue secreted by thousands invisible glandular hairs used to catch insects. This glands that exudes produces acids and enzymes that coat the insects that are glued until dissolve its soft part. Butterwort composed about 70 species, but only few are recently discovered, while others are still open for discovery. The plant have typically circular and rosette form leaves with a musty or earthly smell that measures a few inches in diameter. Its flowers colored reddish, others are white, pink, purple or yellow are funnel-shaped, cupped or flat, with beards for some species and blooms in spring that last for a couple of months. 3. Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum). Discovered by Ordoardo Beccari in 1878, an Italian botanist, this plant is an appalling in the garden because of its flower’s smell as bad as the corpse lily. Called as the “Worst smelling flower in the world”, titan arum is a native of Sumatra and is called “bugna bangkai’ or corpse flower because of its odor that emits a rotting flesh. The plant grows from a large tuber weight from 25 – 50 kilos. Once the tuber becomes dormant, the flower emerges which produces a large, petal-like leaf, the spathe, which forms a vase. The color of the outside spathe is green and the inside is red meat in color. From the center of the vase, a tapered column-like stem called spadix grows straight up with a heights of 6 feet or more with a 3-foot diameter. (Source: University of Connecticut).

4. Flor de Muerto (Lisianthius nigrescens). A native of Mexico, this plant is unusual because of its black color flower that looks like dead hence its called the “flower of the dead”. All its plant parts are colored black, from the leaves, petals, fruits, seeds and pollen. The tubular flowers hang downward from 6 foot stems in a seemingly wilted and withered state. Another unusual characteristics of this plant is how it survive without pollinating its flower by insects because it does not possess any attributes to attract pollinating insects.

5. Bladderwort (Utricularia). Look like a miniature orchids when in blooms, bladderwort is the largest and most wide-spread genus of carnivorous plants. These are mostly found from Alaskan swamps to tropical regions, making their homes in wet, mossy trees, fast streams and seasonal deserts. When drought strikes, they transform into tiny tubers to ride it out. Their flower ranges of different color combinations. Bladderwort survived by feeding on small aquatic insects, like water fleas, mosquito larvae and tadpoles.

Exotic Flowers: Luxurious and Impressive for your Home and Garden Decor

There are several types of exotic flowers to best suit any occasion. And of course, depending on your personal taste, you will want to choose the best exotic flowers you can obtain to be the perfect flowers, the most adequate for the purpose they will be serving. For example: at someone’s funeral, you may want to choose bouquet of flowers that the deceased would have loved. Here are some other examples (after all, these flowers are for happy occasions as well as the more tragic ones.

Musas:

The Chinese Musa flower is a stunning example of the kinds of exotic flowers that are perfect for gardens or bouquets.

Calatheas:

The exotic flower called the Genus Calathea is in the Marantaceae family of plowers, however it differs from other genera. The Marantaceae family of exotic flowers, in which Maranta and Ctenanthe are included, are unbranched inflorescences cone-like clusters.

The calathea comes from tropical South America, Calathea, it has about three hundred different species. These flowers love the shade and humidity, they are virtually all grown in much of the world only indoors. These flowers require full shade from the sun. However, if they must, they can handle a small amount of morning sun. These exotic flowers need their soil to be moist but well-drained soil, the use of a fertilizer is recommended.

When, on the rare occasion that these exotic flowers are grown outside—you must be sure that they are healthy, they must be free from all pests and diseases. Some of calathea will die midwinter, but will return again midsummer.

Cymbidiums:

Cymbidiums contain approximately forty-four species they are found in the tropics of the old world. The elegant, large flowered types of cymbidiums come from the higher regions of the Himalayas, and they must be kept in cool conditions in order to bloom well.

Dendrobiums:

Dendrobiums actually have about one thousand different species in their enormous family, they have countess hybrids as well. However, there are many varied growing conditions for this type of exotic flower. It is recommended that one establish from where in the world, and at what altitude their plant is accustom to, in order to determine how to best take care of the plant.

Miltonias:

Miltonias are referred to as the Pansy Orchid sometimes. There are approximately ten different kinds of species, and miltonias are found primarily in Brazil, therefore they are warm-weather flowers, and there are many hybrids with wonderful fragrance, because the militona is such a fragrant flower to begin with. These flowers will add a wonderful sensory ambiance to their surroundings, because in addition to their scent they are extremely pleasing to the eye.

Odontoglossums:

Odontoglossums also have a wide range of species, approximately 0ne hundred and seventy-five. These exotic flowers originated in the mountains of South America, as well as in higher altitudes and are used to wet clouded forests. Thus these wonderful flowers must be tended to under cool conditions, many hybrids exist as well, so there are many types to choose from.

Oncidiums:

These are among the most popular exotic flowers and there are approximately six hundred different species in existence. They come from the tropics of the Americas, and few of them even grow in high altitudes, these also must be supervised under cooler conditions. Fortunately, the hybrids are more tolerant than the species, you will find that this is true for most plants.

Paphiopedilums:

Paphiopedilums, the root word being Paphinia—who was the greek Goddess that the Romans later named Venus. Around sixty species exist, coming from Asia India and New Guinea. There are species with mottled leaved which need to be kept in warm conditions. And the paphiopedilums that are plain leaved and single flowered require intermediate/cool conditions, and plain leaved multiflowered species have to have warm environments to survive.

Phalaenopsis:

Phalaenopsis, or the exotic flower that is often called the Moth Orchid comes from Java and the South Seas, the Phillipines and Queensland Australia. Therefore, they are definitely warm weather growers, and they do prefer to be in the shade. Phalaenopsis would make the perfect houseplant, they are very free flowering and also make great gifts.

Vandas:

Vandas have approximately fifty species. Several hybrids have been derived from the tropics, Asia, and the orient—as far down as Australia. These hybrids require a warm environment that includes plenty of bright light. Many people hang them in their homes or gardens from wooden baskets.

Water Gardening:

Water Lilies and Lotuses are a beautiful touch to your pond, or waterfall etc. Major cultivars of water lilies and lotuses—almost all of which are hybridizers—explore the best landscapes in which to grow these exotic flowers.

Nymphaea and Nelumbo:

The genera Nymphaea and Nelumbo are beautiful species of exotic flowers, other genera in the waterlily family include Nuphar, Victoria, Euryale, Barclaya

Draecena:

Draecena (otherwise known as the dragon’s tree) is an exotic flower that neither requires regular watering, nor does it need much light at all. It’s a symbol of power and prosperity. These flowers may live up to one thousand years. A perfect gift for yourself or a friend or family member who does not have that much time for gardening, but would love to have a beautiful garden, however small, and something elegant and exotic to pass on for generations to come.

Anyone can add a striking touch of color to their home, or even the office with the elegant of wild exotic flowers. Exotic plants and flowers add a beautiful touch to any garden, home, patio or yard, as well as weddings, celebrations, banquets, and more solemn occasions.

How to Care and Grow Crassula Ovata or Jade Plants Flowering Container Garden Favorites

Crassula ovata or Jade plants are shrubby succulent plants that make excellent choices for dry gardens and container plants. Xeriscaping with drought tolerant cactus and succulent plants has become popular in dry areas or places where water conservation is a concern. Jades have thick, deep green leaves sometimes tinged with red on the edges. The leaf shape, like the name ovata implies, are oval from 1 – 2 inches long.

Crassula ovata develop thick, fat trunks that have an aged look and will eventually grow up to 8 feet tall. In late winter jade plants get 3 inch clusters of light pink to pale salmon flowers with five petals. These perennial plants are drought tolerant and only need water once a month or so.

Indoors, succulent jade plants make good houseplants in containers. They prefer bright, indirect light and can take a few hours of direct sunlight but they are also adapted to low light. In a pot, Jade stay small and can even be used for bonsai. Crassula ovata is sometimes confused with Crassula argentia, which has a similar growth habit, but has silvery grey leaves. Crassula are usually not bothered by insects or disease. The biggest problem crassulas face may come from over watering. This will result in a soggy brown, rotting trunk.

In the garden, drought tolerant jade plants will grow in light shade to full sun. In hottest desert areas, crassula do better when they don’t have an entire day of full sun. Crassula ovata are hardy to 41 degrees (5 degrees centigrade). A light frost will show up at brown dots on leaves. Overhead protection is usually enough to protect succulents during a light frost. Heavy frost, or a deep freeze will turn leaves brown and shriveled. Frozen leaves will fall off, or you can brush them off with your hands. If the plant branch or trunk is not damaged, new sprouts should form in a few weeks.

Green jade plants are able to live off rainfall alone in many areas. In my southern California garden, crassula are happily growing in both full sun and shade, in heavy alkaline, clay soil. You can see photos of flowering jade plants at http://www.theGardenPages.com .

To root cuttings like jade plant or gollum jade, start with a 5 or 6 inch cutting. Bury about half of the stalk in soil. This will give you deep roots and helps the plant withstand drought better. Keep the soil moist (like a squeezed sponge). After a month, cut back to monthly watering. The leaves will probably shrivel a bit as the plant forms roots: it is living off the stored energy in its leaves. This is normal. You may also lose a few leaves, which is also normal. The plant will start growing again and may even flower in a year.

Visit at http://www.theGardenPages.com to see crassula plant photos and read about more plants that are versatile and easy to grow. Their winter bloom make jade plants a great addition to any garden or home.
